Energy Bar or Candy Bar? A Dietitian’s Guide to Reading the Label

Walk down any snack aisle and half the bars in front of you are wearing the same costume: earthy packaging, a photo of oats and almonds, and a claim like "natural energy" or "made with real fruit." Some of those bars genuinely are a smart, no-fuss snack. Others are a candy bar with better marketing. The only way to tell the difference is to stop reading the front of the pack and start reading the back — and to know what you’re actually looking for once you’re there.

Start with the ingredient list, not the front of the pack

Ingredients are listed by weight, heaviest first, which makes the first three or four items the most honest summary of what a bar actually is. A bar built around whole foods — oats, nuts, seeds, dried fruit, a recognisable protein source such as whey, soy, egg, or pea protein — is doing what an energy or snack bar is supposed to do: delivering steady fuel from ingredients your body already knows how to process.

Be more cautious when the first few ingredients are various forms of sugar — glucose syrup, fructose syrup, brown rice syrup, honey, and cane sugar are all still sugar, and a label can list several of them separately to avoid one large-looking sugar entry near the top. Highly processed additions like chocolate coatings, seed oils (canola, sunflower, soybean), and artificial sweeteners are also worth noticing, not necessarily banning outright, but noticing. A short list of ingredients you can picture in your kitchen is generally a good sign; a long list of syrups, oils, and stabilisers is a candy bar wearing a costume.

The sugar math: what’s on the bar and what’s in your day

Sugar is where most bars quietly fail. As a rough guide, aim for a bar with well under 10 grams of total sugar, and treat 4–8 grams of added sugar as the range that separates a snack from a dessert. "Sugar-free" isn’t automatically a green light either — that claim usually means the sugar has been swapped for something else, not that the bar has become a health food.

Context matters, too. Current US Dietary Guidelines recommend keeping added sugar under 10% of total daily calories — roughly 50 grams on a 2,000-calorie diet — and the American Heart Association suggests a tighter ceiling of around 25 grams a day for women and 36 grams for men. A single bar with 15–20 grams of added sugar can quietly use up a third or more of that daily allowance before lunch. It’s not that any one bar is a crisis; it’s that an energy bar habit built on the wrong bars adds up fast without ever tasting overtly "sweet."

Fibre and protein: the two numbers that decide how a bar actually feels

Sugar gets the attention, but fibre and protein are what determine whether a bar leaves you satisfied for two hours or hungry again in twenty minutes.

  1. Fibre: Look for at least 3 grams per bar, ideally from whole-food sources — oats, nuts, seeds, dried fruit — rather than isolated fibres like chicory root added purely to boost the number on the label. Fibre slows digestion, supports steadier blood sugar, and is a big part of why a good bar keeps you full.
  2. Protein: For a genuine snack, 7 grams is a reasonable target; bars closer to a meal replacement often carry 10 grams or more. Complete protein sources — whey, soy, egg, or a well-combined plant blend — do more work here than a token sprinkle of protein isolate added mainly for the front-of-pack claim.

A bar with decent fibre and protein but a modest sugar count will almost always outperform, in real-world satiety, a bar that’s low-sugar but also low in both.

Sugar alcohols: useful, but read past the marketing

Many lower-sugar bars lean on sugar alcohols — sorbitol, xylitol, erythritol, maltitol, isomalt — to cut the sugar count without losing sweetness. In moderate amounts, roughly 5–10 grams, most people tolerate these fine, and they genuinely can help reduce added sugar. In larger amounts they’re only partially absorbed by the body, which is why they’re a common, unglamorous cause of bloating, gas, or an unexpectedly urgent trip to the bathroom after a bar that looked perfectly healthy on paper. If a "low sugar" bar has ever left you uncomfortable an hour later, the sugar alcohol content — not the sugar — is the first thing worth checking.

The five-second version

If you only have a moment in the aisle: flip the bar over, read the first three ingredients, and check sugar against fibre and protein rather than looking at any one number alone. A bar with real food up front, single-digit added sugar, a few grams of fibre, and a meaningful amount of protein has earned its "energy bar" label. One that leads with syrup and finishes with a fraction of a gram of fibre hasn’t — no matter how earthy the packaging looks. The label doesn’t lie; it just requires reading past the front of the box to hear what it’s actually saying.
